Jack Gregory's Rolling Tribute to the Men of the 538th Engineer company (LC)

There is a gentleman, named Jack Gregory that lives in Skaneateles, NY.  He served in the military during the Korean War.  His hobby is collecting antique military vehicles.  On a whim, Jerry stopped by one night to see if Jack knew where to find a D-7 dozer that could be equipped with a Rome Plow.  As he entered Jack's garage, he was greeted by a 10 ton, almost identical to the one he drove in Vietnam.

When Jerry told Jack that he was holding this years reunion, Jack began a mission to bring the truck "up to snuff".  A new deck was added to the trailer.  The numbers were painted on the side of the trailer, exactly as they were on the trailer Jerry pulled in "Nam".  I can't begin to tell you how many hours have been put in, to have this truck pass Jack's inspection.

With the help of his wife Angie, and his "buddies", and several nights of "chasing" jerry away so they could go to bed, the 10 ton truck made it's debut in the Owasco Fourth of July parade, with Jerry in the drivers seat, and Jack, dressed in his 538th 'honorary member' t-shirt and cap, as co-pilot.

As I watched that 10-ton begin it's climb up a small incline, heard the engine whine, and saw the smoke billowing from the stacks, I know there was no one, more honored than I, at that moment.  It's a memory that I will cherish forever.

On Wednesday, the 3rd of August, 2005, I heard that engine come to life again.  With Angie in the front in her vehicle, Jerry and Jack in the 10-ton, and me following behind, we began the short trip to bring the 10-ton to shamrock Road.  Traveling behind this noisy, smelly, old piece of metal, thoughts of 'yesterdays', flashed through my mind and I do believe if I had closed my eyes, I would have seen McCain and Vile, racing through the jungles of Vietnam.

Thanks  to Jack and Angie for the precious gift you have given to us.
